Split full names into first and last

Split full names into first and last name with FIND, LEFT and MID, or in one go with the split-text tool, and know when each is right.

Confident · 10 min · 12 steps

In this lesson

  • First name: =LEFT(A2, FIND(" ",A2)-1). Last name: =MID(A2, FIND(" ",A2)+1, LEN(A2)).
  • FIND(" ", A2) is the position of the first space. -1 stops before it, +1 starts after it.
  • LEN(A2) counts the characters; as MID's length it means "the rest".
